How to turn a vague request into a clear, useful prompt — and how to check what comes back before you use it at work.

Self-paced · Accessible
This is a short, original sample created to show how I design AI learning for working professionals. Nothing you type here is saved or sent anywhere.
Step 1 of 5
Where this lesson fits
The full course helps professionals use AI tools confidently and responsibly in their everyday work. This sample is taken from Module 1.
Module 1 · You are here
AI tools at work
Module 2
Getting better results
Module 3
Checking AI output
Module 4
Using AI openly & responsibly
Course information: self-paced and fully online, about one hour across four short modules. Learners who complete every module and the final assessment earn a Level 1 digital badge they can add to LinkedIn or a portfolio. All materials include captions, alt text and keyboard-friendly activities.
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
Write a prompt that gives an AI tool a clear role, task, context and format.
Improve a weak prompt by adding the details that are missing.
Decide what you should check — and what you should never share — before using AI at work.
The four parts of a useful prompt
Most disappointing AI answers come from prompts that leave the tool guessing. Before you hit enter, check that your prompt covers these four parts. Select each card to learn more.
Before: “Write something about our new timesheet process.”
After: “Act as an operations manager. Write a short announcement explaining our new weekly timesheet deadline (Fridays at 3pm). It's for part-time staff who often submit late, so keep it encouraging. Format: under 120 words, plain language, ending with two bullet-point reminders.”
Try it: build a prompt
Scenario: You're organising a free community workshop next Thursday. Thirty people have registered, and you'd like an AI tool to help with a reminder message.
Your prompt:
Choose a role, task and format, and add some context to see your prompt build here.
Prompt strength: 0 of 4 parts
Check your understanding
Three quick questions. You'll get feedback straight away.
Reflect and wrap up
Lesson complete
In the full course, learners earn a shareable digital badge after completing all four modules and a final assessment. This sample badge shows the idea.
Key takeaway: give AI a Role, Task, Context and Format — then check the result before you use it.
Designed for
Working professionals new to AI tools, learning in short, self-paced sessions they can fit around their job.
Design approach
One memorable framework, practised straight away in a realistic scenario, with instant feedback and a moment of reflection.
